Special Projects Gifts

North Country Public Radio engages in a wide and ever changing range of community outreach projects. In a given year we might be working on literacy, agriculture and the recording of regional musicians. What follows here is a description of recent such projects.

We appreciate all gifts that support these projects -- they wouldn't be possible with significant financial investment by our friends. Donors are listed at the close of each project. For more information on sustaining the station through special projects gifts, call or e-mail the station and ask for Susan Sweeney Smith, Director of Strategic Partnerships susan@ncpr.org.

Current Projects

UpNorth Music

In this major studio outreach project, NCPR took its studio on the road in 2006 and 2007 to record over 100 sessions with musicians throughout the region. Download original performances and compositions, or podcast performances and interviews at the project website below. NCPR is launching a 2008 concert tour featuring acts from the project, and will release a 3-CD compendium set, Music Heard UpNorth, in January 2008. New performers will be recorded as the project continues.

UpNorth Music is funded by a multi-year grant from the New York State Music Fund established by the New York State Attorney General, at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

Reading Service for the Print Impaired

Our Reading Service provides specialized audio programs for individuals with visual, physical, or learning disabilities who are unable to read standard printed material. The service offers readings of various national newspapers and magazines. NCPR distributes specially-tuned receivers to qualified individuals, so they can access the service which is broadcast on the station’s subcarrier.

North Country Food Book

In celebration of NCPR's 40th anniversary, we are publishing a book on the food and food culture that keeps the North Country going. Your recipes, food anecdotes, kitchen tips, dining traditions, favorite food quotes, photos, drawings, etc., are wanted. The book will be published in the fall of 2008. You can read all the submissions so far on our Food Book pages.

Recent Project: North Country Reads

"One book" programs encourage the whole community, whether it be village, country or state, to read and talk about the same book. North Country Reads is one such project involving the communities of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. In our third year, 2008, we were proud to present The Language of Baklava, by Diana Abu-Jaber, as our selection.
