January 6, 2009 | NPR· Friend and patron to several generations of composers and artists, Freeman was the catalyst behind the opera Nixon in China by John Adams, as well as pieces by John Cage, Harry Partch, Thomas Ades, Philip Glass and dozens of others.

January 6, 2009 | NPR· Gustav Mahler's larger-than-life symphonies have become orchestra staples. With that in mind, conductor Paavo Jarvi and the Cincinnati Symphony programmed three of Mahler's lesser-known orchestral works. The result is a fresh take on the music of the monumental but troubled genius.

January 5, 2009 | NPR· You never get a second chance at a first impression, the old adage goes. At the start of the new year, Rob Kapilow describes how it works for composers, who want to set a certain tone from the very opening notes of their works.

January 3, 2009 | NPR· Modeled after a successful program in Venezuela, the Baltimore Symphony's OrchKids program aims to build an orchestra and enrich young lives. BSO conductor Marin Alsop contributed funding, passing along $100,000 from her MacArthur "genius grant."

January 2, 2009 | NPR· The legendary deal with the devil comes to life, as the brilliant soprano Angela Gheorghiu stars as Marguerite in the Vienna State Opera's production of Gounod's Faust, with tenor Roberto Alagna in the title role.
