This classic country act is the house band for the Riding Hy Ranch in Warrensburg, performing two or three times each week year-round. Like a lot of bands we met in out travels, these guys play together not just for the love of music, but for the strong friendships that they have with each other.

Don’t be mislead by the name: this is NOT a heavy metal band. Friends Alex Hyatt and Liam Irwin are the songwriting heart of this band that describes its sound as alternative acoustic pop/rock. Sound engineer Joel Hurd was pretty interested in the classic Fender Rhodes keyboard they brought to their session.

Ska, a rhythmically up-tempo precursor to reggae, is a strong musical influence on this band’s sound. Like most of the bands we’ve recorded, though, their songs reflect other musical interests. Shu toured the Northeast extensively in the 1990s, mostly performing for university crowds.

In ConcertNovember 21, 2008 | NPR· Strauss's lurid yet sumptuous one-act opera tells the story of Elektra and her decidedly dysfuntional family — her murdered father Agamemnon, her frantic sister Chrysothemis and their homicidal mother, Klytaemnestra. The production is from the Washington National Opera.
November 21, 2008 | NPR· Singer-songwriter Karla Adolphe and percussionist Caleb Friesen make up the Manitoba-based duo Jacob & Lily. On their recent Mountain Stage appearance, the two show off Adolphe's powerful, passionate voice and steady guitar strumming, along with Friesen's meticulous and driving rhythmic work.

November 20, 2008 | NPR· Based out of his tiny, rustic hometown of Slaughters, Ky., songwriter and guitarist Chris Knight writes backwoods poetry with introspection he's clearly gained by living the words he writes. On this Mountain Stage appearance, Knight performs songs from his latest album, Heart of Stone, as well as the title cut from his previous record, Enough Rope.

November 20, 2008 | NPR· Appleton, Wis., provides a lot of material for Cory Chisel: It's the childhood home of Harry Houdini, and it's surrounded by small towns, bigger lakes, paper mills and vast stretches of rural landscape. The singer-songwriter plays music inspired by the seemingly normal town, and talks about a music scene that takes a lot of pride in itself.

November 19, 2008 | NPR· Poetic young pianist Roberto Plano uncovers the layers of bittersweet emotion in a set of Impromptus written by Franz Schubert near the end of his short life. Plano performs for a live studio audience at WGBH in Boston.
